Morning commute. 4 lane interstate, (HOV, plus 3 more lanes), speed limit 75. I'm in the right lane going 85 to keep with the flow . Of course people are passing on the left because that's what you do. I guarantee a couple of folks in the first lane are in triple digits. This doesn't happen when the road is empty either: in light conditions, people routinely top out on this stretch of road in the very low 80's. It's like when the density starts to rise, a mob mentality sets in. People get emboldened because they won't be the ones to get pulled over, some else will, or they self-justify with the "everyone is doing it" defense.

So I'm in the greater NYC area, and a few years ago, I was heading out to PA to take the then girlfriend back to college.
At about 8pm on a Sunday evening, I was pulling a good 90-95MPH just to keep up with traffic around me, and I wasn't even in the hammer lane.
Scariest part? It was pretty dense traffic to begin with. I've never seen anything like it before, or since.

As a PA resident, I find it weird going to another state and find everyone is doing roughly the posted speed limit.

Funny enough, PA was the only place that gave me a speeding ticket. I'm sure it's because I had NJ plates though.

If it is unsafe, fuck traffic, just slow down a bit.

Generally it's a very small percentage of people that speed when they don't feel safe doing so. Most only go as fast as they feel as say...like the autobahn for instance. Are you new to the area or that commute? Might just take some time to get used to it.

No, I'm not new to the area or to this phenomenon. I don't have a problem with speed if the conditions are clear and safe. There's another portion of the same highway a bit more in the boonies where 90-95 is typical and I'm ok with it there. I really think that what I saw this morning was a mob mentality thing because it only happens when the car density starts to rise. Objectively, any increase in car density means increased risk: shorter braking, more numerous things to hit, and reduced visibility of events ahead. It is this particular situation that seems to result in a collective increase in speed, though, and I'm pretty sure its because of the reduced probability of getting pulled over when there are more cars around.

There's a section of 88 just off of 355 in IL where all four lanes are doing 80+ in a 55 zone . Freaks me out!

It's fun how everyone thinks that someone else will get pulled over and that they are just going with the flow of traffic mainly if the cop DOES stop you, he doesn't give a shit about the others lol
